The Royal Crown Derby History

The earliest surviving item of Derby porcelain dates back to 1750. From the creation of that small cream jug, now owned by the Victoria & Albert museum, sprang a company dedicated to the very highest standards. Over the years the success of Royal Crown Derby has risen and fallen – at one point output was reduced to the devoted efforts of just six craftsmen. Production never fully ceased though, and in 1877 the Derby Crown Porcelain Company was established. In 1890 Queen Victoria granted the company a Royal Charter followed by many glorious years of activity. During this time countless highly skilled craftsmen have contributed to the skills and expertise evident in every single piece produced in our world-renowned factory.

In 1981 an enchanting collection of paperweights was introduced which instantly gained popularity. The year 2002 saw the coming of age range with the colleciton's 21st birthday, celebrated worldwide-wide by thousands of collectors. Today the collectables range is characterised by a contemporary style combined with the appeal of bright Imari colours. Each item in the range is hand-decorated and finished with hand-applied gold and each piece created is subtly different and therefore absolutely unique. Amusing, charming irresistible- the spirit of fun captured in these pieces continues to endear them to collectors throughout the world. Another range is the 'Treasures of Childhood' - this attractive range was inspired by the simplicity of traditional toys. The colours are warm and nostalgic and the range features co-ordinating sculptural and childrensware pieces, making ideal christening and birthday gifts.
